Diamond (Poses) Are a Girl's Best Friend

Early this morning, I went to the gym, running on just 3 hours of sleep. My muscles were weak, so lifting was a let-down, and I tried to run but couldn't get rid of a stubborn side-cramp. I was just about fed-up and ready to leave altogether but decided to stretch out in the studio before I left. It was the least I could do for myself, considering I opted out of finishing the rest of my workout.


I reached for my toes and noticed some of my lost flexibility after months of not doing yoga. I used to prioritize my practice, as it helped me both mentally and physically. I started to get busy though, and I chose to put lifting and cardio first, because I believed they were more beneficial to my body. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike these types of exercise; I just find that I sometimes force myself to do them, instead of enjoying the process. With yoga, I always found myself happy and at peace. I may not have been getting physical results as quickly as I wanted, but I was rewarded with much more than a smaller pant size.


I think that's something to keep in mind for anyone who is choosing to exercise. Exercise is not, and should not, be considered a punishment. It is not a chore. It should feel good! If it doesn't, you might want to consider a different workout regimen.


With that in mind, I compiled a list of some of my favorite ways to get active, in ways that bring me joy!


1) Yoga (the obvious answer here)

My mind, body, and soul are simultaneously exercised by my practice.


2) Going to a trampoline park

This one is especially fun with a group of friends, and it makes me feel like a big kid again!


3) Walking your dog

I suppose if you don't have a dog of your own, you could borrow one....or is that idea weird?


4) Mall-walking

It's not just for the elderly, I swear!


5) Dancing to your favorite playlist

"Dance like no one is watching," right? Or you can just dance in your bedroom alone, so there's no fear of anyone watching!


Maybe one of these will suit your fancy, or maybe you'll be happy to stick with your normal hour-long-iron-pump. Whatever you decide, remember to listen to your body and move it in a way that will make it feel its best!
